OVERVIEW:
Stevia leaf is a South American evergreen shrub in the sunflower family and is a natural sweetener used as a calorie-free alternative to cane sugar, aspartame, and other artificial sweeteners. It has a sweet with a hint of anise or licorice-like flavor but also has a metallic bitter aftertaste. Unlike many other non-nutritive sweeteners, stevia is associated with several health benefits and negligible, if any, side effects. Only a small amount is needed because it is several hundred times sweeter than regular sugar. Use in tea blends and in other beverages, baked goods and other foods to sweeten.
