Sesame is a flowering plant in the family Pedaliaceae whose flower is cultivated for its seeds. Sesame seeds add a mild, nutty buttery flavor to dishes, especially when they are toasted. Black and white seeds are basically the same thing although the black seed is slightly richer in flavor while the white seed is slightly sweeter. Black seeds have their hulls (shells) intact, whereas white seeds have their hulls removed.


They are commonly used in Asian dishes and are the star ingredient in a condiment paste called tahini. They can also be added to pasta, salads, bean and vegetable dishes, bread and other baked goods. You can eat sesame seeds soaked, roasted, or sprouted. Black sesame seeds are also great for encrusting fish and chicken.


Sesame seeds are one of the most ancient foods on Earth. They are a good source of healthy fats, protein, B vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and other beneficial plant compounds. Some of the potential sesame seeds health benefits include better nutrient absorption, increased fat-burning, and improved hormone levels. 



Sesame seeds should be soaked for 2 - 8 hours and will sprout in 1 - 3 days. They need to be thoroughly rinsed with cool, clean water 2 times per day and then drain as much water as possible. Refrigerate your sprouts after their final rinse.
