OVERVIEW:
The human body is made up of 102 minerals and Irish Moss contains
92 of them making this tough and stringy seaweed a remarkable gift from the sea. Not a moss at all but a variety of red seaweed or marine algae, this curly red, purple, or yellow-green plant is found clinging to submerged rocks in tidal pools along the northern Atlantic. Because it was protein and nutrient dense, it was used as “poverty food” during the famous Irish Potato Famine of 1846 – 1848 and kept the Irish from starvation.
Red Moss has a salty bite and has been used for centuries as a vegetable and seasoning for soups and stews. Its flakes can be sprinkled directly onto foods. Irish moss becomes jelly-like when boiled in liquids, in turn, it is harvested to make carrageenan, a thickening agent, stabilizer and lubricant in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. This superfood is a naturally occurring source of iodine exceptionally rich in antioxidants and holds anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.
