OVERVIEW:
The onion is also known as the common onion or bulb onion and is related to garlic and scallions. The bulb is used as a vegetable and is known for its bold, pungent flavor profile. Dried minced, granulated, or powdered onion is a convenient way to add wonderful onion flavor to any dish.
Onion powder rehydrates almost instantly and is perfect in dips, dressings, rubs, and sauces or sprinkled onto vegetables, eggs or even popcorn. The flavor it imparts is strong but short-lived. Minced or granulated onion takes longer to rehydrate and its flavor is less intense but will last longer and so it works best in soups, dips or other recipes where there is enough moisture and time for them to expand.
Onions are nutrient-dense providing minerals, vitamin C, folic acid, B vitamins, several antioxidant flavonoids and other potent plant compounds that have been shown to promote health in many ways. It can help you maintain better blood sugar levels, facilitate in building strong bones and be protective against inflammation. Usually, the more nutrients that are present, the more potent the smell and taste of onions are.
