Licorice, also called sweet root, is a member of the pea family and due to the presence of glycyrrhizic acid, it is 30 to 50 times sweeter than table sugar. With its strong flavor similar to fennel or anise, licorice root is one of the most widely used herbs worldwide and lends its flavor to simple syrups and many types of beverages, including teas. Aside from its use in making candies and lozenges, it is also used in baked goods and sweet and savory dishes.
The whole sticks and slices may be chewed straight, traditionally they would have been used as toothbrushes. Licorice root is the single most used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today because of its ability to increase the effectiveness of other herbs making it more valuable than just as a sweetening agent. This adaptogen herb is so complex that researchers have isolated 134 different compounds
with flavonoids being one of them. Licorice is a powerful antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory which is said to aid with adrenal fatigue, coughs and colds, gastrointestinal issues, and female reproductive issues and that is just a few indications for licorice root.
